This past weekend I was fortunate enough to attend the 2014 MAFO National Farmworker Conference in McAllen, TX. MAFO is a national partnership of organizations which advocate for and provide services to Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers (MSFWs). The conference provides an opportunity to network with other organizations, learn about state/federal programs from agency representatives, and hear of upcoming legislation or its progress as may affect the MSFW community.
Each year the MAFO organization recognizes the achievement of individuals by awarding several awards, including the MAFO Lifetime Achievement Award. This year’s recipient was Arturo Rodriquez, president of the United Farmworkers of America. Arturo is the UFW’s second president, having been selected for the position after his father-in-law’s death, being the great Cesar Chavez. A great article about Arturo’s award can be read in this McAllen newspaper article.
Several previous Lifetime Achievement Award recipients were also in attendance. The 2013 winner is Mr. Bruce Goldstein, President of Farmworker Justice in Washington, D.C.
I’ve known both of these wonderful men for years but only this year asked to have a photo with them. Thank you Arturo and Bruce!
One of this coming month’s projects is to write a conference report. When done, I will gladly provide to anyone who is interested. Use this site’s Contact Me page to let me know.
Thank you for reading!
